private African safaris planned first hand, with trusted partners on the ground in every country.
One flight from Australia and you're there.
OUR STORY
Planned by someone who's actually been
I was born in Africa and spent many years working in the travel and safari industry, planning itineraries and experiencing beautiful camps and locations across the continent. The camps, the guides, the way a day on safari actually unfolds. I know it because I've lived it.
Since moving to Australia I've been a safari planner here for over a decade, designing personalised itineraries for Australian travellers, and for clients around the world who've found their way to me.
Travelling in Africa can be intricate, and that's exactly why people come to me. Where to go, when to go, budgets and what to wear. I'd love to talk it all through with you and make your plans seamless. Creating memories, that's what it's all about.
Jan Stewart, founder, Forage Safaris Africa
“By the time my clients board that flight, Africa already feels familiar. That’s the magic of a tailored safari”

WHY TRAVEL WITH Us
You're never on your own over there
We work with a trusted partner network with people on the ground in every country we send travellers to. Someone is waiting at every flight and every transfer, from the moment you land to the trip home.
Our partners live and work where you're travelling. If something needs sorting mid-trip, someone local sorts it, usually before you've noticed anything at all.
And once you're in camp, you're in the hands of professional guides whose qualification can take years to earn. This is their country. Nobody shows it better.
“Jan organised our complete tour, safaris, transport, lodges, even restaurant suggestions. She created the perfect bespoke three week tour for us. One of the best holidays we have had, and that was certainly because of Jan's care and attention to detail."
— Vern T, Perth
“The itinerary was perfect; just the right amount of time at each camp. Each camp was perfect - tents, food, staff, weather. All the arrangements were perfect. If we were planning another trip to Africa, we would call Forage Safaris”
— Diane and Tom, Washington D.C.
QUESTIONS, ANSWERED
The things everyone asks us first
Honest answers to the questions most travellers arrive with. If yours isn't here, that's what the conversation is for.
-
Yes, and here's why Jan's travellers feel it from day one: you're met at every destination, every flight and every transfer. There is somebody with you the whole way through.
Jan also plans around safety without you noticing. Accommodation in the right neighbourhoods, tours arranged rather than left to chance, and plain advice on the few places to avoid, the same as you'd want in any big city anywhere. Like travelling in Europe or Asia, awareness is your best companion, and Jan makes sure you have it before you go.
-
One flight from Perth or Sydney and you're there. No multi-stop marathon, no long-haul maze. Jan can assist with the flight arrangements as part of planning your journey.
-
It genuinely depends, and anyone who quotes you a number before asking questions is guessing. What shapes the cost: which countries you visit, the season you travel, the style of camp or lodge, and how long you stay. Most safaris are all-inclusive, so your accommodation, meals, game drives and transfers are wrapped into one price rather than added along the way. Gratuities should be budgeted too, and Jan will guide you on that.
Every itinerary Jan builds is tailor-made around your budget and the season's offerings. There's something for a wide range of budgets, and the conversation always starts with what you want to experience, not what you want to spend.
-
There's always a good time to be somewhere in Africa. For Southern Africa, May to September is the sweet spot. East Africa works around its seasons beautifully, and the great migration moves in a year-round circle, so there's a right place to see it in almost any month.
Part of Jan's job is matching where you go to when you can travel, so the timing question usually answers itself once you talk.
-
The best camps are small and they fill early, so ideally around twelve months ahead. Four months out is the practical minimum. If your dates are closer than that, still ask, Jan has made shorter timelines work.
-
No. Jan plans private, tailor-made journeys, it's your itinerary, your pace, your party. On safari itself you'll share game drives with a small number of other guests at your camp, in the company of professional guides.
-
Jan advises on visas for every country in your itinerary, and you'll receive a packing list and checklist before you travel. For vaccinations, see your doctor, they'll give you advice for your specific health and itinerary, and some vaccinations need lead time, so it's worth an early appointment. Jan sends a reminder about three months out.
-
Yes, travel insurance is a requirement for all of Jan's journeys. Some countries now include emergency medical evacuation cover as part of entry, and where that applies, Jan builds it into your itinerary and explains exactly what's covered. She'll also flag what to look for in your own policy, because the wording matters more than people expect.
